Jennie first heard about K-pop in New Zealand and became interested in YG Entertainment’s music in particular. Her mother planned to move her to Florida when she was 14 to continue her education and become a lawyer or teacher. However, she doesn’t like the idea and worries that she won’t be able to find a job she likes while living alone. Her family supported her decision and she moved back to South Korea in 2010 to study at Cheongdam Middle School. That same year, Jenny auditioned for YG Entertainment with Rihanna’s “Take a Bow”, successfully joining the label as a trainee. Through High Cut Korea, she revealed that she was reluctant to make the first move because she was afraid of strangers and could barely introduce herself at auditions. Originally a singer, the company felt she should accept the role of a rapper because most of the songs she covered included rap, and she was the only trainee at the time who spoke fluent English, as well as her native Korean; She also knows basic Japanese and has studied French
