Jennie’s official solo debut was announced in mid-October 2018. After a flurry of promotional teasers, it was revealed that she would be releasing a singles album called Solo, featuring the lead single of the same name. In preparation for her debut, she decided to debut her single “Solo” on November 10 through Blackpink’s In Your Area Tour in Seoul, before releasing it two days later. Jennie explained how “Solo” became her debut song at a press conference on November 12, saying, “When I was in Teddy’s studio, he would create a song and I would record a guide for it. I thought he was making a single for me? He just said, “I’ve got something new, let’s try it.” So I recorded his song and it just happened to fit.” The song is described as a hip hop song with pop elements, designed to show Jenny’s side as an “exquisite girl” and an “independent woman”.
